Steamboy    [ Movies ]

Last night I watched the anime film Steamboy, the latest film from Akira director Katsuhiro Otomo. The film itself showed a lot of potential and sounded like a cool story, but ultimately fell flat from lack of a cohesive story. The end result was some nice visuals and interesting ideas that lead nowhere.

The film may not have been that great, but the theme is still one of my favorites ... the conflict between technology and humanity. I have always thought that how humans have managed the relationship between technology and humanity is in many ways the defining characteristic of our species. I think Einstein summed up the state of the relationship nicely ...

"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity."

where have all the westerns gone?    [ Movies ]

Last weekend I was hanging out a bit with my dad and we decided to kick back and rent a couple of classic westerns to watch and i noticed something odd. I noticed was that unlike the rest of the video store, which is basically all movies from the past 20 years, the westerns section is basically all movies 20 years or older.

So I got to wondering, "how did the entire Westerns genre just die?" I mean, I can understand a bit of a loss in interest, but the death of the whole genre?

I think westerns kick ass and the genre should be revived. My dad and I watched The Magnificent Seven and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and they were both pretty good. Seems strange that people just completely lost interest in that whole genre when there are so many great movies that are westerns.
